RIVERDALE, Md. (September 5, 2026) – In response to ongoing power outages following recent severe storms, The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County is activating emergency weather center and cooling centers across the county today and tomorrow to provide residents with access to a cool, comfortable environment while power is being restored.
While temperatures are not expected to reach extreme levels this weekend, many residents have been without power since the storms. The Department is opening its cooling centers as an additional resource for residents who may need a place to cool down, recharge, and take a break from conditions at home while power outages continue.
Emergency Weather Centers
Three M-NCPPC facilities will operate as Emergency Weather Centers from 8 am to 8 pm today and tomorrow:
- Langley Park Community Center: 1500 Merrimac Drive, Hyattsville, MD 20783
- Palmer Park Community Center: 7720 Barlowe Road, Hyattsville, MD 20785
- Upper Marlboro Community Center: 5400 Marlboro Race Track Road, Upper Marlboro, MD 20772
The Department will continue to monitor storm-related impacts and assess conditions to determine the need for continued cooling center operations and any additional resources for residents.

M-NCPPC’s regular cooling centers will be available Saturday, September 5, and Sunday, September 6, during normal business hours.

Storm Recovery and Facility Updates
The Department’s maintenance and operations crews continue working diligently to clear trees, fallen limbs, leaves, and other storm-related debris throughout the park system. Crews are prioritizing areas with immediate safety concerns and will continue assessments as weather conditions permit.
Watkins Regional Park is now open; however, all facilities within the park remain closed, including the Watkins Tennis Bubble, Watkins Nature Center, and Watkins Regional Park Farm.
The following facilities remain closed due to storm-related impacts:

- Cedar Park Heights Park: 1010 Cypresstree Drive, Capitol Heights, MD
- J. Franklyn Bourne Memorial Pool: 6500 Calmos St, Capitol Heights, MD

- Peppermill Community Center: 610 Hill Road, North Englewood, MD
- Seat Pleasant Activity Center: 5720 Addison Road, Seat Pleasant, MD
Additional closure:
- Riversdale House Museum – closed through Sunday, September 6, 2026: 4811 Riverdale Road, Riverdale, MD
Residents and visitors are advised to avoid closed parks and facilities and to follow all posted signage, barricades, and staff instructions. Those visiting open parks and facilities should use extreme caution and remain alert for downed trees, branches, debris, standing water, and other storm-related hazards.
Continuing Storm Recovery
Crews continue to actively work to restore power and address storm-related impacts throughout the community. M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County teams are working diligently to welcome residents back into community centers and facilities as quickly and safely as possible as conditions allow.
